Conflict in Equations: Computing the Future Growth of Informal Settlements
There are over 200 slums in Mumbai, and each differs by the vocation of the dwellers, and the industry areas embedded in the slum. The city of Mumbai is now attempting to raze these areas and move slum dwellers to high rises. This “solution” is corrupted by poor construction and poor management, and spatially does not consider the vital importance of industry areas.
By contrast, the strategy of this thesis extracts the logic of each industry, and uses it to generate a vertical extension of the slums. The system connects conflicting neighborhoods through infrastructure, allowing for previously impossible collaborations, and introduces a hotel and marketplace as economic stimuli for these impoverished areas.
This is only one outcome of a potential many outcomes. This thesis will continue to develop.
