Fractals of Knowledge Housing Project
Fractals of Knowledge is a housing project, set in the culturally-rich Mission District, that provides its occupants direct access to areas where they can further their own interests and passions. Because there are so many different demographics that thrive in this area, the goal of this project was to find a way to create a cultural hubs that expand upon the existing atmosphere present in the area. The program of this 40 unit building caters to educators, students, immigrants, business professionals, store-owners, and every other demographic by binding them with the common ground of hobbies. It borrows from the concept of the “Study,” which is normally a room in a house where one goes to do their work, and gives it a larger presence by transforming it into a “Cultural Hub.” The living units cluster onto “Cultural Hubs,” and these hubs act as another room to the housing unit. For example, if a physics teacher likes to dance in his free time, he can simply open the door to the dance studio from his own apartment, and create a community with his neighbors who also enjoy dancing.
